An Update from the Helping Hand Food Bank April 7, 2021
For anyone one in need of food assistance please take a look at the page titled "Get Food".
With this recent shutdown, we will provide services but you will not be allowed into the food bank. We will give you according to the size of your family.
As always the food bank needs assistance with donations. During the month of April with lock down, we are following protocol and guidelines that were set out for us according to South West Health as to receiving and giving out of food donations. We now have set up contact tracing for all donations. We can’t receive anything anonymously due to Covid-19. Delivery needs to be made at our alley way door on Tuesday mornings or Wednesdays. Prior to it being accepted please call to make sure what you have will be accepted. PLEASE check expiry dates. Anything old we will not accept. We know that in the past people have just left food at the back door or even at the front door but we have been advised that due to rodents and other 4 legged creatures that wander around it puts the donates at a risk for anyone to touch them and so we would rather be able to thank you in person than to have to dispose of your donation because it was just dropped off.
We also ask people to not bring us food that has been damaged, opened, thawed or outdated. It costs us a lot of money to dispose of food that is not acceptable. This is money that could have been spent buying food instead. We are happy to take financial donations.
We do have a list of things that we are always in need of. Here it is:
small packages of jello and puddings
packages of stuffing
nut-free granola bars
liquid laundry soap
fabric softener sheets
BIG demand for cookies - always in need of cookies!
Canned meat (ham, turkey, chicken, salmon)
Snacks (cereal bars)
Thank you for understanding and
supporting the food bank.
Coordinator of Helping Hand Food Bank
A Gentle Reminder to those who require food assistance:
We have appointments on Wednesdays only from 12 noon to 3:30 pm. These fill up quickly a week ahead of time. If you miss your appointment and do not call, then someone else doesn't get the chance to be assisted due to our intake workers waiting for you. PLEASE don't miss YOUR appointment.
A Message about our Local Grocery Stores
We simply want to say THANK YOU!
The Helping Hand Food Bank is a member of Food Bank Canada. Food Bank Canada has a program that focuses on Sharing food at the community level.
It pairs participating locations of national retailers with local community food banks across the country to provide safe, quality food including: fresh, frozen, non-perishable foods, and consumer goods.
The program not only helps to ensure that food banks across Canada receive a regular, ongoing supply of essential items, but also helps reduce the cost of food waste experienced by retailers.
In a typical year, the Retail Food Program provides local food banks with over 13 million lbs. (over 5 million kg) of food. This food is weekly donated to us by Metro, Sobeys, Walmart and Zehrs. Without their support we would not have the extras to put into our food services.
Our relationship with the local vendors and their employees through the retail food program is what allows us to continue to offer such a great service. This networking enables the Helping Food Bank provide quality food to each and every person who comes through our door.
For this generosity, the Helping Food Bank simply wants to say THANK YOU!
THANK YOU FOR CARING
THANK YOU FOR SHARING
THANK YOU FOR YOUR KINDNESS
THANK YOU FOR YOUR GIVING SPIRIT
THANK YOU FOR STANDING BESIDE US
THANK YOU FOR MAKING SURE WE WERE OKAY
THANK YOU FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF SO MANY
The Helping Food Bank is so appreciative of the generosity of you the store owners and the staff in our community, which has allowed us to continue to feed those families and individuals in need throughout this pandemic.
